Post 47: Text Talk and Shortcuts

LOL. TTYL. C U L8R. FML. OMG. O RLY. HMU. IDK. WBU. HRU. KK. IDC. WDYMBT? WWxD. JK. UOK. TBH. WTF. IMHO. BRB. G2G. JTLYK. FTW. NVM. BFF. BTW. NP. OTOH. PLZ. TTYS. N2S.

These are just SOME examples of things that come up in text conversations. They are also all things that kind of annoy me. You see, I don't really like these texting slang words. I understand where they came from and why at one time they were useful. Back when texting first became a feature, phones didn't have keyboards. They had number keys, number keys that you had to press sometime three or four times to get to the letter you want and if you messed up and went to far you had to start over again. So it makes sense shortcuts would come about to speed up the process.

And I used these shortcuts up until the time that I got a phone with a keyboard.

I no longer use any of them in conversations. Not even lol. Which seems pointless anyway because 90% of the time people use it. They don't actually laugh out loud. Sometimes they don't even crack a smile.

Anyway, there are a lot of people who do still use them and there seem to be more and more each year. Which seems silly. We have keyboards now people. Why do we still need to talk in pointless abbreviations?

Another thing that I think that makes it silly is because, there are ways to still use shortcuts without having conversations look like they are in some weird code. I still type ttyl, but in settings I set it up so that if I do that on my phone it wil automatically correct to the full phrase. I also did it with names of places with long names. So it takes less time to type but doesn't look silly.

I currently have 34 shortcuts set up. BHS and SG are two of my most used ones. (BHS- be home soon. SG - sounds good.)

Anyway I just find I silly when texting people with shortcuts like that. Part of the reason is because it can become a habit and it shows up a lot in other places. People posting on Facebook from their computer use it, and I have heard professors complain and give examples of students using them in messages about their grades or class work.

What do you think?

Do you think text talk should be as prevalent as it is?
